Williams Brothers Brewery

ABOUT
Williams Brothers began brewing ‘Fraoch-Heather Ale’ at The West Highland Brewery near Oban in 1988. In 1995 ‘Craigmill Brewery’ was built in Strathaven near Glasgow. We moved to the New Alloa Brewery in 2004 where we have our own 40 barrel brewery and bottling plant within the original 1882 ‘William Younger’s Brewery.’
Alloa is situated in Clackmannanshire, Central Scotland. During the 18th century Alloa was home to 8 breweries, supplying the local market as well as exporting Scottish beers all over the world. Williams Brothers is now the only brewery left in Alloa, keeping alive centuries of brewing history in the old Scottish brew capital.

BRANDS AVAILABLE

  • Alba Scots Pine Ale - A traditional Highland recipe, popular in Northern Scotland until the end of the 19th Century. This “triple” style ale is spiced with sprigs of spruce and pine, harvested in the spring and brewed with only a small token handful of hops. Break out the goblets and pour with abandon. Rich, tawny, and best enjoyed at room temperature.
  • Fraoch Heather Ale - A rich amber ale with aroma of raisin and whisky, full wood and malt texture and a luxurious barley wine finish. Brewed from malt, heather, and sweet gale, this high gravity Fraoch Heather Ale has been matured in oak sherry casks previously used to mature Auchentoshan single malt whisky. The Auchentoshan Distillery in Dumbartonshire, Scotland, is famed for its sweet soft flavors; its whisky is rated as one of the finest examples of Lowland Scotch.
  • Kelpie Seaweed Ale - Prior to the 1850’s Scottish coastal alehouses brewed with malted barley, grown in fields fertilized by seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavor which we recreate by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. A rich dark chocolate ale, which has the aroma of a fresh Scottish sea breeze and a distinctive malty texture.
  • Scottish Midnight Sun - Midnight Sun is a black porter-style beer, rich in flavor to keep out the cold Scottish winter. Created from a blend of malted barley, roast malted oats, balanced with several generous additions of spicy hop varieties. Scottish porters have been made in Alloa since the 18th century and were held in such great esteem as to be called the Clarets of Scotland. Midnight Sun has won several awards including a gold medal at the World Beer Challenge 2009.
  • Scottish Ginger - Williams Ginger is brewed using malted barley and wheat, is has a recognizably ‘beery’ flavor although it does not contain any hops. We use loads of fresh root ginger, some lemons, and a small amount of organic cane sugar along with the malts and that is it. Our ‘Ginger’ is not super sweet; it is very much not an alcopop so if you have a very sweet palette there are other products out there that will be much more to your taste.
  • Heavy Eighty Shilling Beer - Heavy is the commonly used Scottish name for red or light brown ale, usually between 4 and 5 % alcohol. Other terms for this are seventy or eighty shilling ale. The shilling reference was the duty paid to the government per barrel of beer and was related to the alcohol content. Heavy was generally richer, darker, and sweeter than the session ales with a greater emphasis on the malt character. Featuring a great barley taste and balanced dry texture, it is lightly hopped with a fruity malt aroma and toffee finish.
  • Joker I.P.A. - Joker I.P.A. is our light amber, award winning ale, which has become very popular with the real ale connoisseurs in Scotland. India Pale Ales were originally developed for export to the East India Company in the 18th Century. They survived the long sea journeys thanks to high gravity and generous hop content. Joker uses a triple infusion of high alpha American and European hops to five a fresh citrus aroma and bittersweet full flavor, which may well bring a twisted smile to your face.
  • Scottish Session Golden Ale - Session beers are more about the social aspects of drinking and often involve great chat and live music. This beer is lower in alcohol but is packed with easy drinking character, a light golden ale with a dry crisp flavor and sweet hoppy aroma. A typical Scottish drinking session can last over 8 hours of drinking, chatting, and singing, but will not involve becoming heavily intoxicated.
